I won’t bother trying to do the math on it, but I’ve spent a lot of hours behind the piano in my life. As a kid, experimenting and learning, as a professional, practicing and performing, as an improviser. And thankfully, as an adult, exploring and experimenting, writing songs.

There are several different tracks we can take together, all which follow this general approach: what notes do I play? How do I use my body play them? What is the musical logic unfolding?

Classical: my approach to classical music brings life to an otherwise “dead” tradition. I will guide you through the multifaceted process of uncovering whats on the score, physically producing it, and then having something to say about (or through) what’s written. Playing classical piano is a lot like being a composer: you get to decide how it sounds. If you’ve got a talented kid who is bored with their teacher, I guarantee I will get them interested again. Its so exciting, and so challenging!!

Jazz: I had a lot of fun pretending I could play jazz growing up. Exploration was the name of the game. Building new things. Playing. However, as I returned to jazz studies in college and as an adult,

Improvising: As a poly-styistic improviser, I can bring what ever chops you’ve got into new approaches. Getting in a room and playing with someone better than you is a great way to learn. Talking about what you’re doing, how you learn to open up new options… its great fun. You really can do anything: the challenges are learning what you can doing, and exploring with discipline and focus.

Playing & writing Songs: I love songs. Songs toe the line between the power of language and music. What do songs say beyond words (in music) how does music support the message of the song? I love songs with beautiful melodies, beautiful words, and beautiful textural accompaniments. Often the key to performing songs and an instrument lies in a stronger rhythmic foundation. I’m also a trained singer, so I can help you out with that too. I write songs too, so we can dissect their structure, the structure of the words. I love songs.

My schedule varies quite a bit, but I do hold space for weekly lessons. I charge on a sliding scale of $35-120 per hour.

In short, music lifts us into unquantifiable realms of life. While I am a person with needs, I invite you to reflect on the real value of having music in you or your child’s life. Contemplate your relationship and access to money, and then consider that I am surviving in Boston working as a musician. As in improvisation, we are free to choose how we relate.
